As the iPhone 16 catches heat among speculators, it’s clear that the iPhone 15 is part of history now! Looking at previous releases and all the inputs coming from various sources there are certain catchy features to describe about iPhone 16. Some of them are like, a bigger screen, iOS 18, a new capture button, a solid state volume button, a periscopic zoom lens, and possibly an upgraded version of Wi-Fi. In this article, we have rounded up all the rumored features that are the least you can expect from the upcoming version including the possible release date which is around
iPhone 16 Detailed Specification
Lineup –
Apple is expected to raise the size of the iPhone 16 Pro to 6.3 inches and the iPhone 16 Pro to 6.9 inches, which would be the first significant size improvement in several years, bringing about significant changes to the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16 models will remain the same size as the iPhone 15 models(most probably), with the size adjustments only limited to the iPhone 16 Pro variants.
For the iPhone 16 series, Apple is developing new A-series CPUs based on the most recent N3E 3-nanometer node. Performance and efficiency boost is definite then but specifics on what exactly to look at is still difficult. All four iPhone 16 versions may include capacitive volume, power, and action buttons. Additionally, there is speculation that the next iPhones will include an additional mystery button(capture button maybe).
iPhone 16 Design
For the iPhone 16 design, Apple produced three prototypes, each with a few minor differences in features. A vertically oriented camera is present in all three, which probably enables the capture of spatial footage for the Vision Pro headset.
Two concepts included two different lenses, and one featured a camera styled like the iPhone X. A third design had a two-lens camera along with regular mechanical volume buttons, a capacitive Action Button, a new Capture Button, and haptic buttons with a single volume button.
Mostly rumored and expected, Apple will select the third design, which is represented by the black phone in the pictures. The rear camera will be positioned vertically, there will be a second “Capture” button on the right side for recording video, and below the Action Button, on the left, will be a mmWave antenna for the United States.
Keep in mind that Apple has tested the colors seen in the photos, so the basic iPhone 16 models may come in pink, yellow, and black. These pictures show regular iPhone 16 versions however they will be equipped with a triple-camera setup!
Size Variation
As discussed earlier, the basic series will see no size increase however the pro series is expected to go under some variation. In the following table size comparison is provided to have a fair idea!

iPhone 16 Display
Micro-lens technology could be used in the standard OLED displays to minimize power consumption and boost brightness. MLA, or micro-lens arrays, use a regular grid of billions of lenses inside the screen to lower internal reflection. Visual brightness is increased by the reflected light, while power usage remains unchanged.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will both have LTPO displays in addition to being bigger. What does this signify? Like other pro versions released since the iPhone 13, these screens have a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, which enables far smoother scrolling and an overall more satisfying user experience. A significantly higher peak brightness of about 2400 nits, is another possibility to compete with the Pixel 8 series.
iPhone 16 Camera
An upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens in iPhone 16(pro models), would enable better photos in low light. It would probably work similarly to the 48-megapixel Wide camera, which combines data from four pixels into one “super pixel” for improved image quality through pixel binning.
Along with enhancements for the telephoto and ultra-wide camera lenses, the 48-megapixel wide-angle camera expected in the iPhone 16Pro Max is rumored to have an eight-part hybrid lens made up of two glass components and six plastic elements.
Instead of being exclusive to the larger Pro Max, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may also have 5x Telephoto lenses in 2024.
Planned Haptic Buttons Can Finally Come!
Apple had originally planned to replace the physical volume, power, and mute buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro models with solid-state ones. However, the functionality was removed from the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max because of “unresolved technical issues”.
So it is quite possible to see solid state buttons in the iPhone 16 series. And if that occurs, the unified button design that was speculated to be present on the iPhone 15 Pro models might also be rolled out.
Solid-state buttons function similarly to physical buttons, but when you contact one, there isn’t a real button press. Rather than the button moving, a haptic vibration is employed to simulate a button press and give you the impression that you are pressing down.
Another possibility is that Apple may continue to employ conventional buttons for power and volume control while utilizing solid-state technology for the Action Button and a new capacitive button.
Action Button
The Action button, which can take the place of the conventional mute switch, has several uses, including turning on the camera, starting a shortcut, switching between focus modes, utilizing Translate, turning on and off silent mode, and more.
iPhone 16 Storage
In terms of storage, this upcoming series might not see any major change. Instead, it will cling to previous versions. So based on previous models, you can see the expected storage below,
Expected storage capacities for basic models:
- 128 GB
- 256 GB
- 512 GB
iPhone 16 Pro/iPhone 16 Pro Max anticipated storage capacities:
- 128GB (in Pro only)
- 256 GB
- 512 GB
- 1 TB
Battery – A Boost Is Most Welcoming Feature
There are rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro versions may employ stacked battery technology, which may lead to longer lifespans and bigger capacities. While stacked batteries are a relatively new technology for smartphones, they are widely used in electric cars and medical equipment.
The stacked battery may be used in conjunction with 20W MagSafe and 40W wired charging, which is faster.
A picture of the purported iPhone 16 Pro battery, including an upgraded connector, new design, and 3355mAh capacity, surfaced in November.
Software and Features: iOS 18 Coming?
iOS 18 is certain to come on the iPhone 16. At the next Apple WWDC’24 dev-centric summit, which is meant to promote its latest software for its iPhones, iPads, and Macs, the next major software version of iOS will undoubtedly be unveiled.
There is some talk that Apple may focus more on on-device AI and machine learning processing in the upcoming iOS update, however, leaks concerning software are far more difficult to find than those about hardware. Apple is rumored to be developing a ChatGPT competitor named Ajax, which may be used to power Siri and significantly improve upon the current state of Apple’s intelligent assistant.
There are rumors that iOS 18 will focus entirely on “generative AI,” as Apple is allegedly under pressure to demonstrate its prowess in AI/ML to the public in light of the increased rivalry from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
While iOS 18 will be available for a wide range of iPhone models, the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max may no longer be supported.
Can We Expect New Version A Series Bionic Chip?
The A17 is expected in the iPhone 16(and Plus variant) but will be different from the A17 Pro chip found in the iPhone15 Pro and iPhone15 Pro Max, according to reports. For the iPhone 17 Pro chip, Apple is using TSMC’s N3B process; however, for the regular “A17”, Apple will use the less expensive N3E process in the coming years.
N3E is a more reasonably priced node with a lower transistor density, lower efficiency, and a greater yield than N3B, which is TSMC’s first 3-nanometer node developed in collaboration with Apple.
Apple usually doesn’t create chips, especially for the regular iPhone models; instead, the chips are either taken from the previous year’s iPhone models or the same chips as the Pro models. For instance, the iPhone 15 made use of the A16 chip, which was first seen in the iPhone 14 Pro.
While there has been some speculation that Apple may rename the chip, analyst Jeff Pu thinks the company will use the A18 and A18 Pro names, with all iPhone 16 models having some form of A18-series technology. Pu thinks that the N3E manufacturing process will be used for all of the chips and that the Pro chips might contain an additional GPU core that isn’t present in the regular chips.
WiFi 7
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 16 Pro models may use the next-generation WiFi 7 technology, which is anticipated to offer “at least 30” gigabits per second and maybe as much as 40Gb/s.
With 4K quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) technology and the ability to employ 320MHz channels, Wi-Fi 7 can ultimately achieve up to 2.4x faster rates than Wi-Fi 6 with the same number of antennae. In the end, Wi-Fi 7 will offer lower latency, higher maximum transfer speeds, and more dependable connectivity.
iPhone 16 Price
In comparison to the iPhone14 models, component prices for the standard iPhone15 models had increased by 16%. For the iPhone15 series, Apple covered the higher production expenses; however, to prevent a negative effect on overall income, Apple might have to raise the price when the next iPhone will be released.
iPhone 16 Release Date
Based on the previous release events, the most probable date for the release of the iPhone 16 would be somewhere around September 20, 2024. A brief round-up of previous releases is discussed below,
Series | Release Date |
---|---|
iPhone XS/XS Max | September 21, 2018 |
iPhone XR | October 26, 2018 |
iPhone 11 | September 20, 2019 |

Bottom Line
Well, we have discussed every possible rumor about the upcoming iPhone 16. And in my opinion, there are certain areas which are definitely a clear sign of innovation. In terms of hardware and design, not much change is anticipated but in terms of software, apple will definitely try out AI/ML innovation to rise above its standard bars.
