Game of the Year 2023 nominees:
Well, the nominations were announced on Monday, 13 November with 112 games nominated across various genres. This year gamers have enjoyed quite a good thrill from the release of various action-packed games and long-awaited sequels. However, after having a glance over the contenders it seems, GOTY 2023 is mostly dominated by remakes and sequels be it survival-horror sequel Alan Wake 2 or Dungeons & Dragons-inspired “Baldur’s Gate 3.”
Let’s walk through the GOTY(Game Of The Year) nominees who have shaped the gaming industry in 2023 with their immersive storylines and ignited action.
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
Released on August 3, 2023, by Lauren Studios. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the undisputed nominees accounting for the fact that it is only available for PC and PS5. Yet it managed to gather the attention of a large chunk of gamers. Its 3-year early access strategy benefitted in its favor.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is largely filled with adrenaline-rushing action however its main focus was on its narrative, building an engaging storyline, and positioning itself in an upper-class category with its rich content. Although this idea does contradict with intentions of other mainstream gaming! But the fans themselves have shown the potential of this game.
2. Alan Wake 2
One of the most awaited sequels often described as “The Lost Sequel,” has no doubt made it to the Game of the Year nominees, giving tough competition to the Game of The Year contenders. Released just a little over 2 weeks before the announcements! Alan Wake 2 is also the latest released game among the nominees.
So far Alan Wake 2 has satisfied its users, except for some issues regarding its oversize and optimization. Alan Wake 2 has returned with a new playable character Saga Anderson, helping him to escape from the dark world. Alan Wake 2 has no doubt taken the expectation bars for future gamers pretty high with the concept of Quantum Break and Control, almost making players feel as if they are trapped inside the Cauldron Lake.

3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as Game of the Year 2023 contender:
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has worked more in the sense of what works instead of presenting a reinvention. After its successful predecessor, this game has followed up the same course and provided a satisfying traversal and adrenaline-fuelled combat. On top of that also added new elements to boost up experience such as the introduction of Venom, preparing a platform for future stories.
Furthermore, if we dive into the game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has achieved the feat of providing a more detailed version of a virtual NY City. Also, the frame drops and pop-ins are significantly minimized. Overall it came as one of the best games in 2023 and attracted a large chunk of PS5 gamers. Its popularity among gamers itself has provided proof of its worthiness among Game of The Year 2023 contenders.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Tears of the Kingdom has managed to take up what worked well in Breath of the Wild, thus managing to engage both BOTW players and even the new players in this series. The addition of new content and fighting mechanics has helped it be one of Nintendo’s most represented games.
Tears of the Kingdom resembles a lot to its predecessor, then be the graphical style, in-game exploration, and game features. The new elements include regions in the sky and deep underground, new puzzles, quests, and new storylines. Furthermore giving players Fuse and Ultrahand abilities, which they can use to create unique weapons fuels its adrenaline-filled action. It also increases the engagement between players as they like to boast of their uniquely designed weapons and showcase their abilities. Thus providing players a free hand and making it one of the strongest contenders in Game of The Year 2023.
5. Resident Evil 4 Remake
As we told earlier, this year is blessed with some of the famous remakes, with Resident Evil 4 Remake being one of them! Its surprise release has captured several stellar reviews, making it a big release for Capcom. Although the huge success of Resident Evil 4 had made the release of its remake quite a challenge it has passed the test so far.
In brief, this remake has suited up in terms of reimagination, next-gen graphics, controls, and more fleshed characters. Work put up in its remake is visible from redesigned visuals and gameplay even hanging a POV of overshadowing the legacy of its original version.
6. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario has always been one of the favorites for gamers worldwide. Being already a successful brand the expectations were literally like sky-scrapers. Although its 2D versions had even more mass appeal than the 3D versions. Yet Super Mario Bros. Wonder has become the fastest-selling game in the series, making it the best in the series.
Nintendo’s intention of making this release a successful one among its other 3D releases is visible. All the vibrant colors and character designs describe that clearly. Thus making it as much more enjoyable and impressive. This game is definitely the golden feather in Nintendo’s gaming cap, making it quite a strong Game of The Year nominee.
The list of the nominees is quite impressive, but debatable too! Especially due to the exclusion of some of the legendary games. Nevertheless, 2023 has seen the release of some amazing and big franchises, and a great year for the gaming universe.
